One cocktail recipe every real foodie should know

Since today is the worldwide launch of #NegroniWeek (June 5-11), we thought it was pertinent to share with you the official Negroni recipe!

Believe it or not, this classic cocktail has been around since 1919 so, if you consider yourself a foodie, you should really know the recipe by heart.

But, first, a little bit of history:

According to the story, in the early XX century in Florence, Count Camillo Negroni considered ordering an Americano (Campari + red Vermouth + a splash of soda water) but decided it was time for a change. Instead, he requested it with a touch of gin instead of soda, inspired by his last trip to London and its prevalent gin scene. The bartender was pleased to honor Count Camillo Negroni’s request and added an orange garnish – rather than the lemon wedge of the Americano – to signify the new drink he had created.

In Florence, the Count’s “usual” became known as Count Negroni’s Americano, or the “Americano with a touch of gin”. Whatever it was referred to as back then, the fact is that the Negroni was born. The original recipe is a combination of three classic ingredients which, a century later, mixologies are still using everywhere in the world.

Here is the recipe by The International Bartenders Association (IBA).

  • 3 cl Campari
  • 3 cl gin
  • 3 cl sweet red Vermouth

  • Pour all ingredients directly into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice
  • Stir gently
  • Garnish with half an orange slice
