River City Bangkok Film Club’s next film is Stilyagi (“Hipsters”), Russia, which will be screened on Saturday, 28 November, at 4:00 pm. A cult musical and romantic comedy, centring around a youth movement in the Soviet Union of the 1950s, the film bagged many awards and won over audiences around the world.
At the height of the Cold War in the Soviet Union, the titular “Stilyagi” were a bunch of Western-oriented hipsters who loved jazz, dances like the Swing and Boogie-woogie, exhibited questionable morals, and enjoyed dressing with flamboyant style. They even called the main street they used “Broadway”. Of course the conservative Communists did not approve of them.
The film is a lively and rollicking comedy that takes the viewer on an epic joy ride through 1955 Moscow, two years after Stalin’s death.
One of the highlights of the film is its music from the top Russian rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s. In fact, there have been musical concerts held in Europe and America, featuring only the songs of the film!
The film was screened at top festivals like the Toronto International Film Festival. It won more than 16 awards, including the top Russian National and Film Critic awards, and Audience Awards at many festivals in Europe and America.
The Embassy of Russia is supporting the screening, and will host a reception afterwards. The Ambassador of Russia, HE Evgeny Tomikhin will introduce the film.
The film will be screened at the RCB Forum, on the second floor of River City. Due to Covid 19 and social distancing measures, the seats are extremely limited. Ticket reservations should be made as early as possible at: www.ticketmelon.com/rivercitybangkok/rcbfilmrussia
